Shelf Styling
Shelving is a feature in most homes; however styling them in a way that’s both aesthetically pleasing and practical isn’t always as easy as it seems. To help you successfully style your shelves, whether you’re starting from scratch, or just in need of a little inspiration, this month we’re sharing 6 simple steps to help you effortlessly style up your own shelves so you can create a setup you truly love!
Examples on the top row by Hudson Home and Lindy Galloway, bottom row Salt Box Collective and Donnie Wales.
1. Begin with a blank canvas
When your start to style your shelves, begin by taking everything off so you have a blank canvas and then on a table, place all the things you’d like to have on display so you can see what you’re working with. Items like books, candles, artwork, plants work really well alongside objects like vases and bowls too.
2. Choose your colour palette
Once you have your items all laid out, consider the colour palette. Not only do the items on your shelves need to compliment each other, they also need to work with the rest of the room so be sure to so consider the colours of your walls and soft furnishings. Group your belongings together by colour to see what you have most of; this will help you to distribute the different tones and colours evenly as you start styling!
3. Play around with height and texture
Just like you want to evenly distribute the colours you’re featuring, you also want to play around with height to give your shelves some depth. Place your largest and heaviest items at the bottom like storage baskets filled with magazines, before placing your taller items like vases, frames and artwork. Shelves look best when you have a mix of textures on show too, so look at introducing organic and natural pieces.
4. Make it personal
Your home should showcase your personality and so from your favourite photographs to trinkets you’ve picked up on your travels, shelves are the perfect place to display all the things that are meaningful and personal to you. Different items will work better from room to room, for example objects like stone fruits look great in a kitchen or dining room, whilst shells and coral look lovely in a bathroom.
5. Bring the outdoors in
We’re big fans of adding floral accents and flourishes of greenery all around our home and shelves are absolutely no exception! Whether you opt for a simple and elegant single stem or a potted plant, or you choose to go all out with a blousy bouquet, faux flowers and greenery are shelving essentials.
